Surf Line 2008

We started the Riviera Wave Riders web site in Fall of 2008.  These are our earliest photos taken with disposable and "Flip" type water cameras during our first season...

Rocky was out of the water for a while; but after getting his new 4/3 suit Rocky has been all over the Fall and Winter surf this year.  We hear that following his next birthday; Rocky has a plan to try and surf every single day of the week for a year.  Right-on Rocky; that's the kind of new year resolution we like to hear...

With a fresh 'glass job on the old board and a new 4/3 suit; Gidget doesn't waste any time taking advantage of the first day of winter...

Cowabunga! Can you hear the theme song for "Hawaii 5-0" playing?  Dec. 15th was bleak, cold, windy and raining.  Dec. 16th the beach at the Riviera greeted us with sun, off-shore wind and glassy 2-3 foot "almond eye" waves; sweet!

Conditions were so perfect they even brought Rocky out on the "Rocky Point Special" board.  Rocky just opened a cool new store in the village called "The Village Garden". Shouldn't you be at work, Rocky?  The smile is the answer...

Our photographer was going to take-off behind Rocky on this wave.  As you can see from the water blowing-off the top of the wave; the off-shore wind was strong; so strong it pushed the photographer and his 11' foot board right-out of the wave.  Rocky made a perfect take-off and soul arched his way all the way to the beach...

Our photographer couldn't resist catching a wave with David "Waikiki Style"...   David is saying: "are you getting this"?  The photographer is saying: "the camera is in my wetsuit, I'll catch you on the next one"!  Photo credit to Riviera Wave Rider Stacey, thanks Stacey...

Our photographer is at it again; these waves just kept rolling in like they were from a machine; 'peaks going both directions.  Our photographer just loves to pretend he is a train engineer on these long waves; acting like he is pulling the rope on the train whistle and hollering "woo-wooo"...  Thanks to Stacey for the photo.

Christian is the King of the Head Dip; here Christian is 'tucked into the pocket on a beautiful peeling wave.

Like we said; Christian is the King of the Head dip...  Thanks to Stacey for this photo.  (Where is our photographer, anyway?  Is that him sitting out in the line-up waiting for another wave?)

Matt taking it easy across this beautiful wave face being held up by the off-shore wind.  We're pretty sure Matt was on his cell phone ordering lunch...  Thanks to Stacey for the photo.

It does not get any better than this; surfing with friends, great waves, and beautiful weather.  With Rocky looking on; David lines-up for another drop-in and long right slide over the sand bar...

Here is David trimmed-up and hauling the freight on his stand-up board.  What a gorgeous sky, what beautiful clouds.  Rain was forecast for later-on this day; we were grateful to the surf gods for the epic conditions they provided us with on this outstanding morning...

We may have to get another photographer; this one is pretty useless when the surf is good. All he kept saying is: "just one more wave".  We've heard that one before... Thanks again to Stacey for this photo.

We're cold just looking at this picture.  This is Steve suited-up for the inevitable cold water and air of December.  We think he may have been frozen in this position; all he could say during this session was something about looking for the "Holy Grail"...

Rob has spent a lot of time at this beach and feels a special connection to it like many of us do.  When the waves are flat, you will see Rob keeping up his exercise routine by paddling to Burnout's and back...

We almost started a new page called "Beach Legends" just for Dick.  Dick swims EVERY morning at about 7:00 AM and NEVER wears a wetsuit.   Dick's only apparel is his suit, goggles and that little white cap. Dick swims whether it's hot and 'glassy or freezing with huge surf.  In the winter we enjoy watching him from inside the car with the heater on while eating donuts and drinking hot chocolate...

Sheri rides the waves at Torrance Beach "Hawaiian Style"; all the way to the shore. Right-on Sheri...

(The five photos below were all taken and submitted by professional photographer Lynn Langmead:  www.photographybylynn.com  We met Lynn at the beach and we thank her for submitting these awesome photos of some of the gang.  All we can say is WOW...)

Ahhh...  the classic dance; here is KH cross-stepping to the nose with style and grace.  We all want to surf like this!

'Catch a wave; walk the nose and you are happy for the rest of the day...

Alisa leaning back into a down the line left slide...

Proof that you can't help but smile after surfing...

Tiffany is stoked while exiting the water after an epic surf session with friends...

Randy and Steve suiting up for second AM session.  Randy and several others all visited the Dive and Surf Warehouse sale last week.  Randy can't wait to get in the water with his new 3/2 suit and body board...

The first day of December '08 also found this wave rider coming out of the water after first AM session.  The surf was overhead and walled-up; but she still caught some waves before being shrouded in a fog bank.  After surviving an outside set she couldn't see coming; she wisely decided 'that was enough fun for today...

The last day of November '08 found Collin out all alone in some afternoon low tide action. Even our photographer thought it was too walled-up and shallow to be out; but there was Collin, waiting patiently and then 'snagging awesome rides like this one.  Collin is over 6 feet tall and he is riding a long board, that gives us perspective on this nice overhead wave...

Collin was definitely stoked when he got out and saw that a Riviera Wave Rider photog was on the beach...

'Charging the low-tide walls did not come without a price for Collin; the nose of his board made contact with a sandbar and 'nearly broke it off...  We're glad Collin didn't get hurt though; and watch out for those sharp edges...

The day after Thanksgiving; Jimmy is 'dropping in while The Professor says "I would have gone right"...

Here is Brendan on his wood plank Hawaiian "Alaia" style board.  Flotation is minimal; but long straight rails with no fins make them extremely fast once on a wave...

Collin hooting for another wave rider 'dropping in on a nice November morning...

The Professor.  Some believe he may be the reincarnation of "Loki"; the mischief maker of the ancient Germanic gods.  Either way; The Professor here displays the exultation that  only a surfer knows  when getting to surf on Thanksgiving morning...

"...but I'm tellin' 'ya it was a 12' wave and I had just made this drop knee turn and was trimming up when..." Talkin' story; when you are a surfer, talking story (and listening) is mandatory.

Steve suited-up and ready to paddle-out into some November juice.  Steve is the master of the 360.  Is it the surfer that makes the wetsuit or the wetsuit that makes the surfer; we don't know but we sure like this picture.  We do know Steve usually rides his bike to the beach and runs in the soft sand before he goes surfing.  He is one tough wave rider and one of the nicest people in the lineup.

Carlos keeps-up his biceps paddling when the surf is not happening.

Rippin' Randy 'grinding left on an inside section.  Randy is dedicated; unless it's snowing; he is out there every morning.

The Professor in his signature stance; 'trimmed and flying across some early morning 'glass.

Everybody loves Chris.  (Sounds like a good name for a TV show)  Here is Chris sitting on Bredesen's Reef.  'Just another beautiful day on the Riviera.

Tomoe 'cruising the line-up on a November swell looking for the big one...

Body Surfer Sam.  If you ever see a streak inside a Torrance Beach wave it's a seal, it's a dolphin or it's Sam.  Sam is constantly perfecting the technique of taking-off and riding inside a wave like a dolphin...

Riviera Wave Rider Mike W. dancing to the nose for some "tip-time" on an inside section.   No matter what the conditions are; Riviera Wave Riders bring the fun to the water.

Gidget lines-up for a fast, 'glassy right...

Professor Alex.  We have at least four professors who are regulars; obviously surfing is for intelligent people, dude...  Alex is one of the nicest guys in the lineup; ask him about his board building days in the 70's.

Aloha David.  Long boards or stand-up boards; David 'rips.  Ask him to demonstrate the classic Hawaiian poses like the "Uncle", "Chief", "Tiki" or "Dying Cockroach".  Way too cool...

Board Meeting...  "Geez, how can it be any safer mom, we surf with a Lifeguard"?  Actually, Lifeguard Charlie was headed out for a physical conditioning session when we 'snagged him for a photo.

Christian 'streaking across the inside of "Christians Reef" at the bottom of Torrance Ramp...

Christian Head Dips...

Carlos drops in...

Carlos explains to Rocky "this is the sweet spot, if you stand right over it, it goes really fast"!

Rocky the Beachcomber.  If you ever lose a fin, sand shovel or anything else at the beach; this is the guy to see.  Oh ya, and he shreds! Ask him about surfing with two buddies when one of them ended up on the beach patting his head and pointing inland.  We thought he was heading in and we stayed out.  We got a clue when we went in and saw he got smacked in the head and needed to go to the hospital for stitches.  "Just one more wave"!

Gilligan 'cranks hard...  Actually this is John, another professor.  He gave-up his old nick-name "Gilligan" once during a surf session.  We promised we would never use it again...

Jimmy drops into a thick winter wave...

Gidget grabs a handful...

Rippin' Randy...

Good day to go home and clean the closet...

'Only thing more fun than surfing is teaching someone else to surf...

When there is no surf...

...we paddle to Palos Verdes and go diving...

Nurse Karen aka Karen 7.0 was nicknamed for her 7 mil wetsuit.  She never gets cold...

Just like a pirate crew; a surf crew has to have a parrot.  Tiki is our mascot parrot and The Professor is his keeper.

The Professor chilling in the evening 'glass-off...  Some how you keep hearing the theme to the movie "Endless Summer" when you look at this photo.

'Nothing like duck-diving through a wave in 60 degree water to wake you up...

C'mon Robert, 'show us one more 360 before you go!

No one would take Rippin' Randy serious with his new hat...

Matt lining-up on a Burn-out express ride...

Matt again, going the other way 'tucked inside the "Green Room"...

What a 'session and they are still 'peeling out there...

More to come; when you love to surf as much as we do it can be tough to get someone to run the camera.  Aloha
