Surf Line '12 Winter

The Surf Line pages are perhaps our most popular pages.  Every surfer likes to see pictures of themselves and their buddies in the water.  The newest photos are always at the top; the older ones move down the page.  These are the surfers who were riding the waves of the Riviera during the Winter of 2012...

During the first part of March we had some hot and glassy days with no surf.  That didn't slow Gidget down, she grabbed her stand-up board and took her first 8 mile round trip paddle from Torrance Beach to R-10 buoy off of Palos Verdes.  Congratulations, Gidget...

The Professor looking good on some playful waves with off-shore conditions...

Gee, do you think Charlie is having fun?  We sure do...

Amy looks down the line as she contemplates her drop into a big face...

Gidget lining-up for a bottom turn and a charge down the line on a big and soft high tide roller...

The waves on this March morning were breaking perfectly as if machine made...

Hard-charger Carlos is all smiles after being out of the water for awhile.  It's good to have you back, brother...

Creaky Tiki looking good on his new Aipa...

Amy and Candace riding the merri-go-round on a beautiful March morning...

John dropping right and riding with style...

'Nothing brings a bigger smile than paddling out on a beautiful new board...

As witnessed by the flag flying on the Lifeguard tower the wind was off-shore this morning, the waves were crisp and Amy was flying while the Lifeguard looked on...

Brendan is a prodigious nose rider.  One of the challenges of nose riding though is what to do when your board makes an abrupt stop and you don't...  Photo by Carlos

Perfect wave, board in perfect position and trim, all that was needed was a rider.  Before the rider dove abruptly into the water, someone thought they heard her exclaim:  "OMG, look, a donut"!

Somehow; John, waves and surf photographers often seem to show up at the same place and time.  The camera likes John though and we think John likes the camera, too.  What surfer doesn't?  Looking good, John...

"Cowabunga!"  We could hear John all the way up in the parking lot when he dropped-in on this one...

Scott making a fast left slide...

T.J. riding with classic form...

Unknown rider with a nice "lip smack" on a long board with a flock of birds around him...

Veith having fun on one of his boards that he has made himself...

'Send this photo to the family back home.  'Just another perfect overhead day at Torrance Beach.  Great wave, Amy...  Photo by Carlos

Candace performing a beautiful cut-back...  Photo by Carlos

Danny is always stoked and charging...  Photo by Carlos

When he is not judging surf contests, John G is showing the form that wins contests...  Photo by Carlos

Goofy foot Tiff in control and styling backside...  Photo by Carlos

Veronica, always graceful...  Photo by Carlos

Steve in perfect position...  Photo by Carlos

Kevin with his trusty wooden board making tracks...  Photo by Carlos

Our photog said he had no idea there was someone with a camera on the beach...  Photo by Veith

Chris 'cranks hard off the bottom on this nice overhead wave...  Photo by Carlos

Chris was red-hot this day and was really putting on a clinic...  Photo by Carlos

Boogie Board Steve on a nice right slide...  Photo by Carlos

Gidget stylin' as usual...

Victor, trimmed and charging...  Photo by Carlos

Victor making a beautiful last second cut-out; his head is so deep in the water he ended up looking like the "headless surfer"...  Photo by Carlos

Victor is The King of innovation; here he is demonstrating his theory that there is more than one way to get into a barrel...   Photo by Carlos

If drivers can be distracted with cell phones while driving; how about surfers surfing distracted while filming themselves?  Charlie here is having a blast with his new stand-up complete with GoPro camera mounted on the nose.  "Look mom, I'm surfing"!

Surfing distracted, Charlie goes left...

In the middle of a rain storm the sun broke, a double rainbow formed, epic waves rolled in held up by off-shore winds and Monica was there with her camera.  Thank-you for sharing, Monica...

Amy here has been taking some surf tips from Hollywood Steve; surfing like royalty; her stance is as regal as a queen...

This is Barry Hatchett, producer of the now wildly popular "Beach Shorts Film Fest" that takes place each Summer in Hermosa Beach.  On this morning, Barry was super stoked with his new creation, a "helmet water cam".  Go Barry...

In ancient Hawaiian times, surfing was referred to as "The Sport of Kings".  We agree and we think  Hollywood Steve here looks like Royalty for sure...

David trimmed and making speed while Karen politely backs-out...

What else can be said about John?  He is the real deal.  Right-on, John...

Somebody got a new board here and wasted no time putting it through it's paces.  Nice wave, Gidge...

We never get tired of watching Bill surf; he is all style and grace...

So, this is a new photo of Candace and yes; she is still charging the biggest set waves with style in the New Year...

Eric looking good...

There is no better place to welcome in the New Year than in the surf line; and Karen always does it with class...

David looking good in trunks in 57 degree water...

Our photog taking some time-off to jazz the glass...

Chris trimmed and looking good on some morning perfection...

John is the benefactor here of Brendan and his new GoPro camera mounted to his body surfing hand plane.  Not only did Brendan take this great shot, he even made John an extremely cool mini-video of this wave ride, you can view it at the link under this photo.  Great work, Brendan and thank-you for sharing it with us...

"Catch a Wave with John Gonzalez":   http://youtu.be/R5voOdg93PQ

Tasty waves, off shore breeze, white sand and palm trees; it gets no better for David here...

This is how it looks when you have paddled your heart out for a wave only to have it roll- on without you...

Chad the Man in morning traffic:  "look left, look right, go"!  'Nice wave, Chad...

Sometimes the off-shore wind blows so hard it blows us right out of the wave.  No matter to Karen though, she is still smiling and enjoying the ride...

Candace; aka "Ace"; with a very casual stance and a nice bottom turn on a beautiful wave...

Big John charging some Winter juice; it doesn't get much prettier than this...

Opps; they say our peripheral vision starts to wane as we age; that's what John said anyway after he realized he had dropped-in on Candace...

...not that anyone noticed than drop-in or anything; but the very next day, John was presented with the official "Snake of the Day" award.  The story is he has to hang it on the tower everytime he goes out to surf.  He has to do that until he gets photographic evidence of someone else "snaking" a wave.  John asked "how about three witnesses instead"?  Nah, John, we're sticking with a photo; you know how surfers are...

Don't you just hate it when this happens?

Amy on some nice morning glass while checking for traffic behind her...

Candace trimmed and making speed on a nice left...

Winter's cold off-shore wind and water in the mid-50's means 4/3 suits, booties, gloves and hoods; even for the girls...

John was really charging during December; looking good, John. John's mango board has quite a history already. Bruce shaped it, John rode it and broke it in two pieces on a big wave; Veeth put it back together and here is John riding it again.  The "Mango Special" lives on...

Gidget on a nice right slide...

The spray flies as Kevin charges on his handmade wooden body board...

We're so glad to see Eric back in the water and on the waves again.  Remember Eric left the beach a few months ago in an ambulance with a neck injury.  Eric is a little more cautious now but still has the stoke...

We like it when the dolphin hang around with us, they always seem to bring the waves...

Moments after the dolphin arrived, so did the waves.  It seems to happen every time...

Chris looking good tucked into the power zone...

Seeing that kelp in the background you might think Chad was somewhere other than right here at Torrance Beach.  We are definitely enjoying the kelp this year as it glasses-off the waves nicely...

Paul going deep on a nice sized wave...

This rider was on fire this morning and came shooting out of another of many barrels and up the beach before we could get his name.  If you know him, let us know who he is...
